Choosing a Paint Color

Some of the materials that we purchased for the main floor powder room were easy decisions, but there are others that we're still on the fence about. The decision making process can become daunting because we know that whatever we pick out today is going to be what we'll need to live with for years and years. Naturally, after spending all this time, money, and energy, we want to love the finished room!

Luckily, the decisions left to be made, like the wall color and window treatments, aren't permanant fixtures. But they'll still be a hassle and incur a cost if we want to change them. In a house that has plenty of rooms needing attention, I don't think either of us will be excited about repainting a room that we already crossed off the list.

So...sometimes it helps to have a visual to lay out the options.

Chair rail, charcoal gray walls

White walls, picture molding

Black walls!

Navy walls

Decisions, decisions...which is your favorite?

Foyer Before

I had some time to kill while Chris was in Japan on business. Desperate to make some big changes with little time, money, and skill I decided to paint the front doors in the foyer. Here's a before shot:
I love the house numbers painted on the transom window and the wallpaper is growing on me, but I am not a fan of the brass chandelier and the once white doors with all those locks and deadbolts. Jeeze...and we thought this was a nice neighborhood!
I have a big challenge in keeping with the Victorian integrity of the house while still making it look current. I don't want to decorate it all with antiques and period light fixtures. It will end up looking like one of those old house museums where people dress up in costume and walk around churning butter and making horseshoes. I also don't want to ignore all the charm and character a house with this much history has. So the plan for now is to paint the doors, update the lighting, keep the wallpaper, and buy something a bit modern for the floor. Here's my inspiration:

The rug is from Burke Decor, the chandelier is from Pottery Barn

Master Bedroom Before

Our new master bedroom is a MAJOR upgrade from our old house. We finally have the luxury to fit nightstands on both sides of the bed. Heck, we could even go crazy and put a king size bed in there if we ever wanted to. Closet space? There's plenty of it. In fact, we each get our own.
There's just a whole lot of nautical-ness going on...

I have something more like this in mind
